The End: Question 7

What do you think this play reveals about our need for freedom? About the power of love? About courage and hope? About good and evil? In your answers, consider how the play’s themes relate to the themes of another work, such as The Taming of the Shrew.

I think this play tells us that freedom is a thing that you create by yourself. Trying your best and trying hard creates freedom to do something. Freedom is also important because Holocaust was the fight of Jews who wants freedom from Nazis. I think if you have no hope, there won't be any freedom because you have to hope and try something to let it work, not just stay calm and wait for it. Being with your famil is the most important and i believe that freedom is not always doing what you want and doing what we have to do, like being with family and knowing the love of family. I think "A Boat to Nowhere" was also a book that had a theme of family and "The Diary of Anne Frank" has almost all same thing because they are having a journey that could look impossible but they have hope. Still there are conflicts like pirates and polices comming in to the building and looking for a Secret Annex. I think reading "A Boat to Nowhere" helped me understand this play.

Fame of Holocaust: Question 6

Why are there so many books, movies, documentaries, etc. about the Holocaust? Why do we keep retelling this story? Holocaust has been such a big thing and it is a big issue right now. In Germany, teachers are teaching about Holocaust and telling them it should never happen again and they teach them to prevent the deadly event that could happen later. Holocaust killed millions and millions of people in the concentration camp and it was only few type of race like Jews and Gypsies. I think that could have ended the race. That was kind of racist and I think that is against Human rights. I think it was one of the most killing time period because it was during the World War II and everyone was scared. Basically people got evidence like Anne Frank's diary and there were survivors, from those deadly camps so it is really famous and repeating. When American took Japanese and put them into Concentration camps, they didn't kill alot of people and there was reasons for that, but Hitler and Nazis killing Jews didn't have reason. One of the reason that Hitler didn't like Jews was that, Jews were smart so they became chief advisor of Germany, and they made strategies and other tactical things in WWI so Hitler is saying that they lost cause of Jews and they should revenge and let them be punished this time. Germany had to pay alot of money cause of what they did and they basically lost the war so they have to give money to the winners and they had to repair their country again. There are still mysteries and i think Holocaust wasn't totally bad because Germany learned and experimented things for Medical purposes in Jews. Now Germany has better medical system. If Holocaust wasn't in the history, there won't be Hitler, Mussolini and all those guys and problems with Jews.

Discovered: Question 5f

Act I, Scenes 4, 5: Describe how the Hanukkah celebration in Scene 5 is interrupted. What does Peter do to make matters worse? According to Dussel, how will this incident lead to their discovery by the police?

In Hanukkah celebration a robber came in and went out cause of the noise the cat made. Mr. Frank tried to go out and close the door, but the police came so they had to comeback and hid. They had to be fast. Mouschi, the trouble maker, made a noise and the police where really thinking about it and asking theirselves where the sound comes from. Later Mouschi makes those cat noise and finally the police notices that it was a cat sound and goes away. Everyone was really nervous and fearful because the police almost foundout the Secret Annex. They had problems with the cat and the cat-allergic person, Mr. Dussel tried to take away the cat and send it away, but Anne and Peter stopped it. Mr. Dussel always say the negative things and he think he is caught and the next day, Mr. Kraler came and told someone kind of knew there is hidden room behind the bookshelf and he wants better payment. Mr. Dussel told Mr. Kraler to pay him more because he could be telling everyone and if he does they are in big danger. Mr. Dussel was wise but he is selfish that he wants to be alive. I think it could work, but people's mouth is not that heavy, so he could just say it in once and Franks, Van Danns, and Dussel could go to the concentration camps.

Conflicts: Question 5d

Act I, Scenes 1-3: List the conflicts that have developed among the characters by the end of Scene 3. Why are these conflicts dangerous for the people in the Secret Annex? What other conflicts do you think might arise?
I think when Mr. Dussel came in there are alot of conflicts with the cat and everything, especially Anne has a lot of problems using the same room. I think if Mr. Dussel and the famliy, especially Anne and Peter fight with him, one day when he gets out he will tell everyone where they are and try to attack them. Mr.Dussel is really picky and he is really selfish which makes harder for others. He tries to take a bigger piece of cake and he is not gentle and generous enough to let other have more when he have less. I think they could get caught cause Anne, Peter, Mouschi, and Mr. Dussel could fight each other because of their friendship and cause of the cat-allergy. I think Mr. Dussel is like one of those little kid that is really selfish and doesn't know others, but himself. I think if Mr. Dussel finds another place he will tell the neighbors and the Franka and the Van Daan family will get dangerous.

Mind-Controls: Question 5a

5a. "But always remember this, Anneke. There are no walls, there are no bolts, no locks that anyone can put on your mind." Explain what you think this statment means. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

This statement is kind of complecated, but it is also a meanginful one. I think this statement is saying that even though someone hurts and threaten you, you will always be strong enough to hold what you have in your head. For example, if you get caught and go to the concentration camp and they ask you who helped, usually kids or teenagers say the real man, which is Mr. Kraler and Miep. This statement tells how Anne used to be loud and tell everyone what she knew and not quiet like Margot. In this period, there is Holocaust, and Hitler and the Nazis are trying to insert or brain-wash people to think that Jews are wrong and what Nazi does is right. It is same as how Kim Il Song did to his people. He told everyone and brain-washed his citizens that he is the god and they have to believe in him. In North Koreans situation it means that you have to go against Kim and not believe that and don't let Kim controll their mind. I believe that being a prisoner is a really bad thing so we try to get out by telling something secret and i think this statement will help Anne to not do that and be strong. It was kind of meaningful because when someone says something about you , you just can't let them say that you are bad or something mean. You should lock your brain and think what you think you are which is type of having a positive self-esteem.

Teenage: Question 5c

5c. Do Anne and Peter seem to have typical teenage attitudes toward their families?

I think they do have those typical teenage attitudes toward their families. One thing is that when Mrs. Van Daan talked about her legs in the past and how many boyfriends he had embarassed Peter, but that interested Anne. Girls are really curious and outgoing in that stage, but Peter is just shy. I think Peter is one of those shy teenage guy that doesn't want to talk until you get really friendly. He won't talk to someone first because he is scared. I am not sure about this, but i think Peter is scared cause of his apperance and he is scared of what other people will comment on how he look and how he act. Peter gets embarrased alot in this story cause of his mother and usually teenage doesn't like their parents and try to be alone. Peter is in that stage where he wants to be alone with his pet, Mouschi. Anne doesn't really like their parents because their paretns like Margot. I think this is almost close to the stories because in fictions, there is the perfect sister and you have to follow her and if you make mistakes you get punished and you hate that. Anne doesn't like Mr. Frank and Mrs. Frank, but I think she likes to be with Mrs. Van Daan more because she doesn't really have a personal thing or a thing that she covers it up. I think Mrs. Van Daan is open for any questions so Anne is more freer to her and get closer to her. Mrs. Van Daan talks about Anne being Peter's girlfriend. Peter hates that because he is shy and doesn't want his inside to show the outsdie. In other hand, Anne doesn't really care because it could be true and at first when they came to the Secret Annex Anne was bugging Peter which means it is sign of liking him. I think they might have different type of characteristics from our teenage because it is the past and we are in the modern times.

Hardship: Question 5b

5b. What do you think would be the hardest part of life in the Secret Annex: the fear of discovery, the need to keep silent for hours at a time, the sharing of cramped quarters with strangers, or some other aspect? Explain.

I think the hardes part of living in the Secret Annex is the fear of discovery. You have your family to be safe from the strangers and living with the strangers and strangers are not going to do something to you because they are in the same situation and they will need more people as they need. If they want help and advantage toward the NAZIs they will have to stick together, so being with strangers are not the most hardest part. In other hand getting discovered is really fearful and scary thing to happen. They went into the Secret Annex to not get caught, but if you get caught or discovered you failed your mission and their will be no hope because it is deadly inside the concentration camps. In my view, having fear everytime for everything you do is the worst thing. You can't do anything because if you make any small squeaky noise you get caught and you go to the concentration camp. People die in concentration camps, and if they get caught that lead to hell or the concentration camps. Somoe suriviors describe the concentration camps as hell because they use those Jews and other people to test some medical things and experiment and just kill. Getting discovered could happen really easily because if you just make noise while everyone or normal Germans work in that building. With a little squeak you get caught and you die. It is tragic that you die after getting discovered and that is really sad because if you have other problems in the building inside with strangers you will have your family members, but in concentration camp you are alone maybe you will be with you family members, but that is by luck because in Anne's case his father lived but Anne died.
